Careers In Music: The Third Degree

Careers In Music: The Third Degree

By Taylor Forcier

Popular artists are not the only professionals in the music industry.  There are many behind the scenes careers in music that are not as commonly known.  All of these are necessary for music as we know it.  There are also opportunities for careers in music outside of the commercial music industry.  Some of these careers can be pursued by obtaining a degree from one of many online music schools.

Music Production

Many online universities offer a Bachelor’s of Science in Music Production degree program.  Music producers work with coordinating technical aspects of recording music including mixing, editing, writing, and pinpointing problem areas during recording.  They oversee the sound engineers, musicians, and other staff involved with making a recording.  Because of this, they must be well versed in all aspects of recording.  Those working on a degree in music production often study such areas as music production in media, composition programming, copyright law and publishing, digital recording, musical arranging, and songwriting.  Students also study basic music theory as it applies to composition.  A strong emphasis is generally put on the use of music technology.  This can include recording, mixing software and hardware, and various other aspects needed to produce music.
