Even though the GRAMMYs has existed for 50+ years, it wasn’t until 1979 that dance music was recognized as a separate genre when Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” was honored as the Best Disco Recording. One ceremony later, danceable records went back to being placed in mostly pop and R&B categories. It wasn’t until Madonna made a huge splash with 1998’s electronica-infused Ray of Light that NARAS continued their acknowledgment of dance.
