GRAMMY Predictions 2009: R&B

With the phenomenal success of artists like Beyoncé, Maxwell, and Keri Hilson this past year, I fully expect them to have a strong hold on the R&B categories come nomination time.

“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” should appear in Best R&B Song with likely challengers “Blame It” (Jamie Foxx f. T-Pain), “I Look to You” (Whitney Houston), “Knock You Down” (Keri Hilson, Ne-Yo & Kanye West) and “Pretty Wings” (Maxwell) but I do have reservations about it. Like Beyoncé, Alicia Keys has won over ten Grammy Awards and was thought to be a sure fire nominee in several categories last time after the insane chart dominance of As I Am. Not only was she snubbed in the big categories but in several R&B categories as well.

However, it’s better to be safe than sorry so look for B to be included in Best R&B Female Vocal Performance next to Mary J. Blige (“Stronger”), Keri Hilson (“Slow Dance”), Mariah Carey (“Obsessed”) and Whitney Houston (“Million Dollar Bill”).

After an eight-year gap between album releases, Maxwell came back with a vengeance as “Pretty Wings” topped Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart for a consecutive 14 weeks. He leads the pack in Best R&B Male Vocal Performance as well as Best R&B Album which has fierce competition from Whitney Houston (I Look to You) and Smokey Robinson (Time Flies When You’re Having Fun).

Keri Hilson’s debut album, In a Perfect World…, spawned the colossal radio hit “Known You Down” and garnered generally favorable reviews from music critics. It shouldn’t have any problem garnering a nod in Best Contemporary R&B Album against efforts by The-Dream (Love vs. Money) and Jamie Foxx (Intuition).

Keri Hilson been ballin’ this year. I hope she walks away with a win for at least one of her nominations. I’m thinking that she’ll probably win something for “Knock You Down”
