Who is The-Dream?
To put it simply The-Dream is the R&B voice of the ATL. And as we all should be aware by now, Atlanta is the hip hop/R&B capital of the world. Atlanta has bred more successful contemporary hip hop/R&B acts than any other city for the last 5 years at least. The South is on top of the rap game at the moment and ATL is right at the heart of that Southern hip hop movement. Atlanta is also the birthplace of crunk music…YEEEEAHH! (Sorry lol I couldn’t help that one)
For those of you who are unfamiliar with The-Dream, in my opinion he is one the most creative hit songwriters on the market right now. He’s the lyrical mastermind behind numerous recent hits including “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)”, “Touch My Body”, “Bed”, “Umbrella”, and many more. Below is a simple little equation I developed to summarize Dream’s signature style and unique sound:
Prince + R. Kelly = The-Dream.
The-Dream has the superb sense of vocal melody and the slick metaphors that made R. Kelly such a hit during his pop/R&B/club years. Dream also incorporates Prince’s raunchiness, his creativity, his daring, and his lady-killer falsetto voice. All of these elements mixed into the arsenal of one performer makes for some pretty exciting music that, although it clearly reflects The-Dream’s inspirations, the uniqueness of it allows him to stand on his own as an artist.
Reportedly The-Dream will be releasing his 3rd album Love King in December this year, just 9 months after the release of his 2nd album Love vs. Money (released: March 2009). Don’t expect any more singles to follow-up “Walking on the Moon” featuring Kanye West (the 3rd single released off Love vs. Money).
Besides his 3rd album, The-Dream is currently working on the debut album from explicit R&B group Electrick Red (his pet project) and on Christina Milian’s new album– both of which will be released on The-Dream’s Radio Killa Records.
